You've probably seen them. Reiki certification courses online — some for $20, some even less. A few hours of video, a downloadable certificate, and suddenly you're "certified."

I'm not here to shame anyone who has taken one of those courses. Curiosity is beautiful, and the fact that you're drawn to Reiki at all says something meaningful about where you are in your journey.

But I am here to tell you something important — something those courses simply cannot give you.

So, What Is Reiki, Really?

Reiki is a gentle, hands-on healing practice that works with the body's natural energy to restore balance — physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

The word itself comes from two Japanese words: Rei (universal) and Ki (life force energy). Together, they describe something that has been practiced for over a century, rooted in a tradition passed down from teacher to student, generation after generation.

Here's what makes Reiki different from most wellness practices: it's not just something you do to others. It becomes a way of living. A daily practice. A language your hands, heart, and nervous system begin to speak fluently.

It's not just for practitioners. It's a life skill you carry with you always.

An attunement is a sacred energy transmission — passed directly from a Reiki Master Teacher to their student, in person. It is the ceremonial opening of your energy channels, the moment when you are formally connected to the Reiki lineage. It is not symbolic. It is not metaphorical.

It is the heart of Reiki.

And it simply cannot happen through a download.

This is why, when someone asks me whether an online Reiki course is "the same," my honest answer is: no. Not because the teachers aren't sincere, but because the most important thing — the transmission — requires presence.

Why the Lineage Matters

Reiki is not something that was invented recently. It was founded in the early 20th century by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist who developed the system after years of spiritual practice and study.

From Dr. Usui, the teachings were passed to Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, then to Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the West. From there, the lineage has continued — teacher to student, hand to hand, heart to heart — for over a hundred years.
