Can Reiki Help with Anxiety and Depression? An Honest Reiki Master’s Perspective
People often ask me this question.
Not in a clinical way. Not in a research-paper way.
Usually it sounds more like this:
"I've tried therapy… meditation… supplements… Do you think Reiki could help?"
And every time someone asks me that, I pause for a moment.
Because the honest answer isn’t a simple yes or no.
After years of working as a Reiki Master and energy healing practitioner, I’ve learned something important:
Reiki doesn’t magically remove anxiety or depression.
But sometimes, it helps people feel safe in their body again.
And for many people, that is where real healing begins.
The Anxiety Most People Don’t Talk About
Many people imagine anxiety as panic attacks or obvious nervousness.
But that’s rarely what I see in my practice.
Most of the people who come to me are incredibly capable.
They have careers. Families. Responsibilities.
They are the ones everyone depends on.
But inside, their nervous system is exhausted.
They tell me things like:
• “My mind never stops.”
• “I wake up tired even after sleeping.”
• “I feel overwhelmed but I don’t know why.”
• “I just don’t feel like myself anymore.”
Some even whisper something that feels hard to admit:
"I think I might be depressed."
What I Noticed During My First Reiki Sessions
Years ago, a woman came to me for a Reiki session.
She looked completely put together.
Successful job. Beautiful family. Everything seemed fine.
But when she sat down, she said something that stayed with me forever.
"I’m not sad… but I feel like I disappeared from my own life."
She had been pushing herself for years.
Taking care of everyone else.
Ignoring her own emotional needs.
During the Reiki session, nothing dramatic happened.
But halfway through the session, I noticed something subtle.
Her breathing slowed.
Her shoulders softened.
The tension in her jaw relaxed.
When the session ended, she opened her eyes and said quietly:
"I haven't felt this calm in years."
That moment changed how I understood healing.
How Reiki May Help Anxiety and Emotional Stress
From my experience, anxiety and depression are often connected to a dysregulated nervous system.
When someone has been under stress for a long time, the body can remain in a constant fight-or-flight state.
Reiki sessions create an environment where the body can shift into deep relaxation.
Many people experience:
• Slower breathing
• Reduced mental noise
• Deep physical relaxation
• Emotional release
• Better sleep after sessions
Sometimes people cry.
Sometimes they fall asleep.
Sometimes they simply feel lighter when they leave.
Reiki Is Not a Replacement for Medical Treatment
This is something I always tell people honestly.
Reiki should never replace professional mental health support.
If someone is struggling with depression, therapy, medical care, and professional support are incredibly important.
But Reiki can be a powerful complementary practice that helps support emotional healing and nervous system balance.
For many people, Reiki becomes a moment where they can finally:
Pause.
Breathe.
And reconnect with themselves.
What I’ve Learned After Years of Practicing Reiki
People don’t usually come to Reiki because they believe in energy healing.
They come because they are tired.
Tired of pushing.
Tired of coping.
Tired of pretending everything is okay.
And sometimes what helps the most is simply having a quiet space where someone holds supportive energy for them without judgment.
Reiki creates that space.
And sometimes that quiet space is where the first shift begins.
Final Thoughts
Can Reiki help with anxiety and depression?
Maybe.
Not as a miracle cure.
Not as a quick fix.
But as a gentle doorway back to stillness.
And sometimes, that first moment of calm is the beginning of everything.
