What Is Somatic Sound Healing? When You Don’t Just Hear the Sound — You Feel It

One of the comments I hear most often after my sound bath and private healing sessions is:

“I’ve never experienced anything like that before.”

Many people have experienced a traditional sound bath, where you lie down and listen as crystal singing bowls, Himalayan singing bowls, gongs and other instruments are played around you.

But sometimes during my sessions, I bring sound even closer.

I may gently place a Himalayan singing bowl on or near different areas of the body and allow the vibration to be physically felt.

This is one way I incorporate somatic sound healing into my Sound Bath and Reiki sessions.

What Is Somatic Sound Healing?

“Somatic” simply refers to the body and our awareness of physical sensations.

In a traditional sound bath, you primarily experience sound through listening and through vibrations moving through the surrounding space.

When a singing bowl is placed directly on the body, the experience can feel very different.

As the bowl is gently played, its vibration is transferred through the area beneath it. Instead of only hearing the sound, you may notice buzzing, warmth, tingling, pulsing or a wave-like sensation moving through the body.

Some people describe it as deeply grounding. Others tell me they can’t quite put the feeling into words — they just know that their body feels different afterward.

Every person’s experience is unique.

How Do I Use Singing Bowls on the Body?

In my sessions, I may work with a Himalayan singing bowl around different areas of the body while moving through the chakra system.

Depending on the session and the individual, I may place a bowl on appropriate areas such as around the abdomen, heart area or lower body, while other areas are approached differently for comfort and safety.

I gently play the bowl and allow time for you to notice the vibration before moving on.

This isn’t about forcing the body to “release” something.

It’s an invitation to become aware of sensation, slow down and receive.

Why Does It Feel So Different?

Sound is vibration.

When you hear a singing bowl across a room, your ears receive the sound waves. When an appropriate singing bowl is played while resting directly on the body, you can also physically feel its mechanical vibration.

That direct sensory experience is one reason it can feel so different from simply listening to a sound bath.

For some people, focusing on vibration also makes it easier to bring attention out of a busy mind and back into the body.

You don’t have to understand it or make anything happen.

You simply notice.

Somatic Sound Healing + Reiki

I often incorporate singing-bowl vibration into my private Reiki sessions.

Reiki offers a quiet, hands-on or hands-near-the-body experience, while sound introduces another sensory element through tone and vibration.

Depending on what feels appropriate for the session, I may combine Reiki, Himalayan singing bowls, crystal singing bowls and other sound-healing instruments.

I also sometimes incorporate on-body singing bowl work into my group sound bath experiences, giving participants an opportunity to experience sound in a more personal way.

For many people, this becomes one of the most memorable parts of the session.

You Can Read About It — But Feeling It Is Different

This is probably the hardest part of somatic sound healing to explain.

You can watch a video of a singing bowl.

You can listen to a recording.

You can read about vibration.

But feeling a singing bowl resonate through your own body is an entirely different experience.

That’s why I often hear:

“I don’t know how to explain what I just felt.”

And you don’t have to.

Sometimes the experience itself is enough.
